ON THE STAGE
WSU's Bonstelle Theatre (originally
built on Woodward in Detroit in 1902 as
Temple Beth El) presents The Crucible at
8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m.
Sundays, Oct. 12-14 and 19-21. The Tony
Award-winning play by Arthur Miller
explores the effects of paranoia and
the destruction of innocence caused by
accusations of witchcraft in 1692 Salem,
Mass. The play's witch trials stand in for
the anti-Communist "witch-hunts" of the
1950s during the McCarthy era, and its
themes are still relevant today. $12-$15.
(313) 577-2960; www.bonstelle.com .
Another play with political overtones
is Stephen Padilla's Picking Palin,
which explores the behind-the-scenes
Republican maneuvering of John
McCain's campaign managers as they
go through the process of choosing a
running mate for his 2008 presidential
bid. The Michigan premiere runs 8 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 12-Nov. 3,
with a 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 matinee,
at Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company
in its new location, in residence at
the Abreact Performance Space (1301
W. Lafayette, #113, in Detroit). Says
Executive Artistic Director Frannie
Shepherd-Bates: "This play examines
some real 'hot-button issues objectively,
presenting a number of viewpoints,
demonizing no one." $15-$18, pay-
what-you-can tickets available to all
performances. (313) 408-7269; www.
magentagiraffe.org .
The villains of musical theater are
highlighted in the Spotlight Players'
From the Shadows: The Villains Take
the Stage, an evening of cabaret at the
Village Theater in Canton. Director
Rebecca Biber also will perform. Show
times: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday,
Oct. 12-13. $13-15. (734) 394-5300;
spotlightplayersmi.org .
At the end of the
day it's nice to feel
grounded by the
finer things in life.
