hat's new in sports at
Frankel Jewish Academy
in West Bloomfield?

Plenty.
It starts at the top. Robert Miller is
the new athletic coordinator, and, for
the first time, the
school has a full-
time assistant help-
ing out with sports.

director.
Frankel also has
a new ice hockey

team that's play-
ing at the club level
this season before
it possibly becomes
a full-fledged inter-
scholastic team.
Of the 16 players
on the team, nine
are Frankel students.

Arena is the team's
home rink.
"We'll see what happens after this
season," Miller said.
Frankel offers boys soccer and ten-
nis; boys and girls cross-country; and
girls volleyball in the fall.
Boys and girls basketball and boys
and girls bowling are offered in the
winter. This will be the second sea-
son that Frankel will have freshman,
junior varsity and varsity boys bas-
ketball teams. It's the only sport with
three teams.
Spring offerings are boys baseball
and golf; and girls soccer, tennis and
softball.
Miller earned a bachelor's degree in
journalism and a master's in educa-
tion from the University of Michigan.
He's worked in public relations
for the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore
Orioles and Marx Layne & Company
in Farmington Hills and taught at
Mesivta of Toledo in West Bloomfield
and now Frankel.
Meyers earned bachelor's and
master's degrees at Michigan State
University. The bachelor's was from
James Madison College and the mas-
ter's is in public relations.
She's worked at Fox Sports-
Detroit and NBA TV, and she's been
an account manager at ePrize and
5-Hour Energy.

Before former Detroit Pistons coach
Herb Brown is inducted into the
Michigan Jewish Sports of Fame, he'll
do some coaching.
Brown will lead a basketball clinic
for youngsters ages 8-17 from 10
a.m.-noon Sunday, Oct. 21, at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
The $20 fee includes a T-shirt.

Proceeds will benefit the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation, which
sponsors the Hall of Fame, and Kenny
Goldman youth basketball league at
the JCC. But foundation executive
director David Blatt said the clinic isn't
intended to be a big money-maker.
"It's something we're doing to give
back to the community," he said.
Brown, who has 45 years of coach-
ing experience in the NBA and inter-
nationally, will have plenty of help at
the clinic.
Former Piston John Long, foundation
board members and several inaugural
winners of the foundation's Pillars of
Excellence award will lend a hand.
The Hall of Fame induction din-
ner, which includes presentations of
the Pillars of Excellence awards, is
Monday, Oct. 22, also at the JCC. For

Sophomore midfielder Eric Weberman
from Farmington Hills scored an
important goal recently for the nation-
ally ranked Northwestern University
men soccer team.
Early in the second overtime period
in a Big Ten game at Michigan State,
Weberman collected a crossing pass
from teammate Grant Wilson and
scored into the bottom right corner of
the net to beat the Spartans 2-1. It was
Weberman's second goal of the season.
Weberman came close to ending the
game twice in regulation time, but a
header went just over the crossbar and
a shot was barely wide to the right.
It was a big win for the No.
18-ranked Wildcats (7-1-2, 2-0)
because it came on the heels of a slug-
gish tie against DePaul, and an equally
sluggish first half against Michigan
State.
