B&B Italia swivel chairs cushioned by a steel

mesh shell encircle an oval Saarinen dining table

in the breakfast room. "You feel like you're in a

nest, looking out at a beautiful landscape," says

Schwartz.

"We found one big slab of stone, which was very exciting," says Schwartz of the 9-foot granite-covered

backsplash. "It became the focus of the room — it has movement, it has color. It's like an abstract painting.

It's amazing that it came from the earth."

The perimeter of the kitchen, in

all-white lacquer, is a collaboration

between Schwartz and John Morgan

of Perspectives Custom Cabinetry.

"I wanted the walls to go away,"

says Schwartz, making the islands

and the backsplash the centerpiece.

The cabinetry, which protrudes

about 3 inches and is framed by the

wall, hides the refrigerator and a

coffee/breakfast center, and a walk-

in pantry peeks out from behind the

ovens. The twin walnut, stainless

and granite-topped islands, one for

work space and the other with an

integrated stainless sink, are raised

on stainless-steel legs for a floating

effect.
