Ramping Up

JFS' Project Build! coordinates four
new ramp constructions.

F

ive local businesses have
teamed up with three non-
profit organizations to build
four wheelchair ramps for people in
need. Jewish Family Service's Project
Build! provides home repairs and
modifications for individuals who are
low income or have a physical dis-
ability.
After receiving several calls for
assistance from sister agencies in
the broader community — United
Cerebral Palsy of Metro Detroit and
Neighborhood Service Organization
— JFS decided to branch out to build
wheelchair ramps for the first time.
This project was completed in part-

industry experts managed each proj-
ect as a result of a partnership with
the Building Industry Association of
Southeastern Michigan. These vol-
unteers included Gordy Oliva from
Gordy Oliva Remodeling/Go Barrier
Free, Tim Saling From Elder Living
Construction, Larry Cohen from
Cohen Homes and David McGee from
Pro Carpentry Inc.
In early September, Pro Carpentry,
Cohen Homes and Home Depot vol-
unteers built a ramp for a 42-year-old
man with cerebral palsy in Detroit. On
Sept. 27, the final three ramps were
built in one day. One ramp was for a
4-year-old girl in Highland Park who
has cerebral palsy. Saling led this con-
struction.
