Obituaries

Arthur Ochs Sulzberger,
New York Times Publisher
(JTA) — Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who
was publisher of the New York Times
for more than three decades, has died.
Sulzberger died Sept. 29, 2012, at his
home in New York following a long ill-
ness. He was 86.
He was publisher for 34 years begin-
ning in 1963. His son Arthur Sulzberger
Jr. took over from him as publisher in
1992 and as chairman in 1997.
The Sulzberger family had bought the
newspaper in 1896.
The elder Sulzberger made the deci-
sion in 1971 to publish the classified
Pentagon Papers, which offered a Defense
Department history of the U.S. involve-
ment in Vietnam. The documents were
published after a U.S. Supreme Court
challenge by the Nixon administration.
The Times won 31 Pulitzer Prizes dur-
ing Sulzberger's tenure. He also helped
boost subscriptions and annual revenue.
Sulzberger, who was known by
the nickname "Punch," served in the
Marines and was a graduate of Columbia
College.

Heirs Sought For Assets
Of Holocaust Victims
(JTA) — A nonprofit entity set up by
the Israeli government is launching a
campaign to find the North American
heirs of Holocaust victims entitled to
unclaimed assets.
The Hashava Company, which was
established by a 2006 law, is seeking
to find the rightful heirs of more than
60,000 unclaimed assets held in Israel.
Thousands of Jews across Europe
invested in pre-state Israel prior to
World War II, and those investments
have continued to grow.
The Company for Location and
Restitution of Holocaust Victims'
Assets in Israel, or Hashava
the
Hebrew word for restitution — is
responsible for finding heirs to the
investments and has set up an online
database allowing individuals to
search for family names.
The campaign, which is scheduled
to last until mid-November, includes
media advertisements, as well as out-
reach to synagogues and Jewish orga-
nizations.
