Partners discovery. Scientists estimate that visible matter makes up no more than four percent of the total mass of the universe, and the recently discovered Higgs boson particle could be a bridge to understanding the 96 percent that remains obscured. Professors Paul Karchin and Robert Harr of the Wayne State University Department of Physics and Astronomy made important contributions to the search for the Higgs boson through their work at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland and at Fermilab in Illinois. Their team was responsible for operation of the cathode strip chambers that are a key part of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at CERN. At Wayne State, our reputation for academic excellence begins with the men and women of our faculty. Their research is changing the world; their teaching and mentoring skills are changing students' lives. AIM HIGHER wayne.edu October 4 • 2012 47
