Crane eases Nazi boxcar into future
exhibition space at HMC.
he Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills moved its World
War II railway boxcar by crane Sept. 24 inside to its permanent loca-
tion in the Alvin & Henrietta Weisberg Gallery.
The Nazis used boxcars to transport millions of European Jews to concen-
tration camps and their deaths during the Holocaust. This boxcar is believed
to be one of the last in existence and the only one exported to the United
States from Germany. The HMC acquired the boxcar last September.
Local philanthropists Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg's generous donation
is funding the construction of the permanent exhibit, which is tentatively
scheduled to open in mid- to late-November. The gift also will be used
toward a permanent educational endowment. The DeRoy Testamentary
Foundation and the Oliver Dewey Marcks Foundation are providing addi-
tional support for the exhibit.
