Temple Shir Shalom's softball team

Super Champs

Steve Stein

Contributing Writer

T

hey didn't need it, but the
guys on the Temple Shir
Shalom team played with extra
motivation this season in the Inter-
congregational Men's Club Summer
Softball League.
"We wanted to win the league cham-
pionship for Jeff," said manager/player
Howard Rosner, referring to beloved
former teammate Jeff Fox, who died
suddenly late last year.
The mission was accomplished in
typical Shir Shalom style. The team won
all 12 of its regular-season games and
all three of its playoff games to capture
its fourth consecutive league title and
sixth in seven years.
Shir Shalom beat Congregation Beth
Ahm 15-1 in the playoff title game. A
20-10 win in the semifinals over Temple
Israel No. 1 gave Shir Shalom a shot at
another championship. Beth Ahm had
a closer semifinal game against Adat
Shalom No. 1, winning 3-1.
Since losing 21-11 to Temple Kol Ami
in its only playoff game in 2008, Shir
Shalom has been on a remarkable tear.
It has won 45 of 46 regular-season
games and all 11 of its playoff games. Its
only loss was a 7-4 setback to Temple
Beth El during the 2010 regular season.
Thanks to its four straight titles, Shir
Shalom now has won 10 championships
since the league was formed in 1996.
That's three more than all the other
teams combined.
Talent. Chemistry. Stability. Shir
Shalom has it all.
"I'd say we have six of the top 10 out-
fielders in the league:' Rosner said. "And
of the 16 players on our roster this sea-
son, nine have played together on the
team more than 10 years, and another
five have played together at least six or
seven years.
"We had two new players this year.
The only player we didn't have back
from last season was Jeff!"
The rookies were outfielder-shortstop
Jaryd Elias, son of outfielder Richard
Elias, and outfielder Michael Bloch.
"Most importantly," Rosner said, "we

enjoy playing together."
Shir Shalom has a huge target on its
back when it takes the diamond. But
Rosner said that doesn't cause pressure.
"In fact, when a game is close, when
the other team is getting excited about
maybe beating us, our adrenalin starts
kicking in," he said.
It happened in Shir Shalom's semifi-
nal game against Temple Israel No. 1.
Ahead 9-2 in the top of the third
inning, Shir Shalom played what Rosner
described as its "worst inning defen-
sively of the season." Temple Israel No. 1
took advantage by scoring six runs and
cutting its deficit to 9-8.
"Everything that could go wrong for us
went wrong in that inning:' Rosner said.
It was still 9-8 when Shir Shalom
came to the plate in the bottom of
the fourth and ended the suspense by
'exploding for 10 runs.
A new league sportsmanship award
named in honor of Fox was presented
for the first time to Dennis Horwitz
from Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Each
team nominated a player for the award
and Horwitz was selected at random.
"It was wonderful that Dennis won
because he was good friends with Jeff,"
Rosner said.
The other nominees were Larry
Kaplan from Adat Shalom No. 1, Gary
Granat from Adat Shalom No. 2, Rabbi
Schneur Silberberg from Bais Chabad,
Jeff Kahan from Beth Ahm, Mark
Goldberg from Beth El, Dan Lippitt
from Shir Shalom, Randy Chudler from
Temple Israel No. 1, David Whitten
from Temple Israel No. 2 and Mike
Halbany from Kol Ami.
"The sportsmanship in the league was
outstanding this season," Rosner said.
"Maybe it was because we were giving
out a sportsmanship award in Jeff's
name. The award is a reminder of what
the league is all about, and Jeff epito-
mized that spirit.
"He was our catcher and backup
pitcher, but more importantly he was a
laid-back, relaxed guy who had a kind
word for everyone and was very sup-
portive." ❑
