Editor's Note
As the Nov. 6 election draws near, the
Jewish News will expand its political
coverage to include additional stories
about local, state and national candi-
dates and the issues that will be driving
voters' decisions.
We also welcome reader input.

Because of limited space, however,
we cannot print readers' letters endors-
ing or attacking specific local candi-
dates. We invite readers who wish to
endorse candidates to publish their
letters on our website, thejewishnews.
corn. Simply register at our site and
click on "new blog post" under the

Blog tab and then follow the prompts.
We will consider publishing in our
print edition, as space allows, letters
from our readers that are focused on
issues being debated during the elec-
tion. We also welcome your feedback
and suggestions for stories you'd like to
read about in our pages. E

Romney Politicized
Embassy Attack
Republican presidential candidate Mitt
Romney made the decision to politicize
a tragedy.
When the American Consulate in
Benghazi was violently attacked, result-
ing in the death of U.S. Ambassador
Chris Stevens and three other
Americans, Romney asserted that the
Obama administration sympathized
with those who waged the attacks.
This statement not only demon-
strates Mitt Romney's reckless disre-
gard for the truth, but also displays his
self-serving political opportunism as
well as poor judgment.
Statements from the Cairo Embassy
and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
never expressed sympathy for the
attackers; in fact, the Obama adminis-
tration condemned the attacks.
When this tragedy occurred, Mitt
Romney could have acted as a patriot
and a leader. Instead he chose to act as
a political opportunist. This is another
critical leadership test he failed.
Does anyone believe that this man
should be commander-in-chief?

issues such as war and peace and the
very survival of the Western World.
A petition with 613 signers neces-
sarily implies that Jewish law supports
Obama's re-election. Since this num-
ber can't be a coincidence, I can only
presume one of two things: Once the
organization got to 613, it turned down
the other rabbis standing in line, since
a "rabbi overrun" would have ruined
the point. Or maybe the organization
had only 612 names, in which case it
"drafted" an independent voter.

613 Rabbis For Obama
Can Be Mistaken
When 613 rabbis, including Rabbi
Norman Roman of Temple Kol Ami in
West Bloomfield, signed the petition
released by the Obama administration
in mid-August, what they implied was
more objectionable than what they
said.
I would ask every signatory to this
petition to first look around the world
— at the calamity of the Mideast, the
threat Israel is facing from a nuclear
Iran, and the deteriorating state of
European culture and economy — and
then look at our own feckless foreign
policy as well as the deteriorating state
of the economy, out-of-control federal
spending and expanding deficit.
Reasonable people can disagree on
the right to choose, health care reform
and public support of education. But it
is tragically misguided to give domestic
social issues priority status over global

MaCohen Fan Says
Herring Can Fly
As a lifetime MaCohen's enthusiast, I
appreciate your recent article about the
history of the company. Now that I've
moved to North Carolina, I'm stuck
with lesser quality herring products.
Whenever I visit Detroit, I always
stop by Hiller's to pick up a few jars to
bring home (chopped herring is my
favorite). After a recent visit, the TSA
screener at Metro Airport pulled my
bag aside to search for an offensive
item identified by the scanner.
Pulling a jar of MaCohen's creamed
herring out of my carry-on, she exam-
ined it with a puzzled look and then
appealed to her supervisor for a ruling
on its acceptability. "Shmendrick, it's
herring!" I explained.
Given that it contained less than 3
ounces of cream sauce, I was permitted
to continue home with my treasured
delicacy.
Perhaps you could consider future
articles on lox and smoked fish.

Jews Should Be Wary Of
Thomas More Law Center
The letter "Thomas More Law Center
Is Justified In Eagle Case" (Sept. 20,
page 5) extols the TMLC, which is, at
best, a very dubious organization, par-
ticularly for Jews.
I have no personal interest in the
Eagle School controversy. If there was
wrongdoing, it should, of course, be
investigated and corrected.

However, the TMLC is "dedicated to
the defense and promotion of the reli-
gious freedom of Christians," which it
is entitled to do. That:includes crosses
and creches on public property and
prayer in public schools. Separation
of church and state and the common
school have enabled Jews to thrive in
the U.S., but is an anathema to the
TMLC.
It's not in the First Amendment, but
Thomas Jefferson, who authored the
First Amendment, explained in 1802
it meant a "wall of separation between
church and state." Additionally, in
1797, the Senate ratified a treaty with
Tripoli stating, "As the Government of
the United States of America is not in
any sense, founded on the Christian
religion ..."
Thus, we have to be very careful
who our "friends" and bedfellows are.
Incidentally, during the McCarthy era,
the U.S. government wasn't "inundat-
ed" or overwhelmed with communists,
Jewish or otherwise. Several hundred
out of millions of federal employees
went to jail and many of those were for
lying about past associations and not-
then affiliation. Many convictions were
subsequently overturned.
