n the midst of preparing for Rosh
Hashanah, 20 women and girls
took a break from cooking and
attended a class — on baking.
The Sept. 13 program of the Chabad
Jewish Center of Commerce included
hands-on instruction, with each par-
ticipant making challah dough from
scratch, shaping it and taking it home
to bake.
"The ladies were taught how to make
various round challahs because we have
the custom to eat round loaves on Rosh
Hashanah to symbolize the continuity of
life,' said Chabad Jewish Center's Estie

Greenberg, who led the program with
Fruma Slavaticki of Oak Park. "They
were also taught the traditional six-
braided challah, which some made and
then twisted into a round shape."
The group also snacked on fresh-
baked challah and dips, discussed
the significance of the use of challah
and explored the tradition of challah-
baking.
"Because it is a mitzvah, women
prefer baking their own challah for
Shabbat and holidays," Greenberg
said. "This event gave the opportunity
for the women in our community to
come together and make their very
own challah to be served on Rosh
Hashanah."
