tions are catching on and making up
for lost time; the youth and Jewish
scholars are rediscovering it as a
means of expression," he adds. "They
are very serious about reviving this
expressive language?'
Because of the physical deteriora-
tion of many books, the center cre-
ated the Steven Spielberg Digital
Yiddish Library in 1998, making
reprints of every title, all available for
sale, and launching the digitization
project. (www.yiddishbooks.org ).
"Thanks to the wonderful generos-
ity of Mr. Spielberg [the noted movie
producer], this entire modern litera-
ture can be preserved permanently
for future generations of readers, stu-
dents and scholars," said Lansky.
The book center has a link to
Detroit through Eugene Driker, a
Detroit attorney and member of
the Wayne State University Board
of Governors. He's chairman of the
Yiddish center's 16-member board of
directors.
"I come from an old-time,
Yiddish-speaking home, and my wife
and I attended a Yiddish camp in
Massachusetts 21 years ago," Driker
recalled. "That's where we met Aaron
and got interested in his project. I
joined the board and then became
chairman last year.
"Aaron Lansky is a transformative
personality in American Jewish cul-
tural life; he rescued a great language
that was threatened with oblivion and
deserves the plaudits of Jews every-
where," he added.
Like Lansky's book center, the
Detroit Jewish News Foundation has
its own board, composed of many
young leaders in the Jewish commu-
nity. An honorary board, including
Lansky, helps mentor the younger
members.
"The foundation board members
recognize they are standing on the
shoulders of the leaders who came
before them;' said Horwitz.
"We hope to emulate Lansky's pas-
sion, energy and creativity in our
digitization project. His vision and
perseverance for the book center
compose a model that we, at the
Jewish News Foundation, hope to
emulate in our own uniquely Detroit
way . ,,

A "Conversation with Aaron
Lansky" will begin at 7:30 p.m.
