Wearing Detroit Maccabi breast cancer T-shirts at the Rockland County (N.Y.)
games are Detroit JCC staff member Ariella Monson, Detroit delegation head
Karen Gordon, and Detroit coaches Larry Silver and Jodi Neirynck.
Steve Stein
Contributing Writer
K
aren Gordon's mother has breast
cancer. Jodi Neirynck lost a sis-
ter to breast cancer.
Together, they've raised about $300 for
the fight against the disease through the
sale of pink Detroit Maccabi T-shirts.
The women have been involved in the
Maccabi Games for years, Gordon as a
Detroit delegation head and Neirynck as
a Detroit tennis coach.
"After my mom was diagnosed with
breast cancer [in June 2011], I wanted to
do something to raise money and aware-
ness," Gordon said.
Neirynck lost her sister, Shari Yarsike
of Southfield, on Oct. 4, 2011, at age 53.
"Shari and I weren't only sisters.
We were best friends. I hope no one
goes through what she went through:'
Neirynck said.
Yarsike was initially diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2005. Since then,
Neirynck has made the fight against the
disease a part of her life.
She's participated in two Susan G.
Komen 3-Day 60-mile walks. She
did one in Philadelphia instead of in
Michigan in 2010 so she wouldn't miss
coaching Detroit Maccabi tennis players
in Richmond, Va.
She wears a crystal pink ribbon pin
every day. The pin was given to her as
a gift from a friend while she was in
Philadelphia.
Gordon talked to Neirynck about
the shirt idea earlier this year, and she
joined in. The sale began in late spring.
All the profits are going to the
American Cancer Society, earmarked for
breast cancer research.
Detroit Maccabi coaches and other
personnel wore the shirts at the games
this summer. Several representatives
from other delegations saw the shirts
and purchased them.
"It was an honor to wear the shirt for
my sister and Karen's mother.," Neirynck
said.
The shirts are still being sold at $10
each. To purchase one, send an email to
Gordon at kgordon@jccdet.org or call
(248) 432-5482.
So Long, Sammi
Captain Sammi Goldsmith led the
Detroit Maccabi volleyball team in
Houston in her fourth and final games.
Teammates Becca Berman and Aurora
Newman also participated in their last
games. On Coach Brad Steel's team were
Danielle Keith, Elizabeth and Monica
Merzin, Izzy Nakisher, Rana Weinfield
and Bailey Weiss from Chicago.
Hit Men Are A Hit
They did it again.
The Motor City Hit Men won their
seventh International Jewish Men's Slo-
Pitch Softball Tournament champion-
ship, beating the Detroit Mayhem 5-4 at
Power Park in Novi in the title game of
the 34th annual tournament.
"We're the best Jewish men's softball
team in North America until somebody
dethrones us," said Hit Men player-coach
Rick Sherline.
It was quite a summer for a core
group of nine who played for the Hit
Men and teams in the B'nai B'rith and
West Bloomfield Thursday Night Class C
leagues.
They went a combined 40-6 including
20-4 in the B'nai B'rith league and 11-2
in West Bloomfield. They won regular-
season and playoff championships in
both leagues.
The Hit Men went 9-0 in the 14-team
international tournament, including a
walk-off win over the Mayhem in the title
game.
The Mayhem scored four runs in the
top of the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead,
and that's the way the score stayed until
the Hit Men came to the plate in the bot-
tom of the seventh.
A leadoff home run by Marc Tushman
tied the game. Lyle Schaefer, playing
in his 26th tournament, singled up the
middle and Todd Gesund, who pinch-
ran for Schaefer, went to second base on
Ian Freed's walk.
That set the stage for Andy Schwartz's
line single to center field that brought
home Gesund with the winning run, giv-
ing the Hit Men their seventh title since
they first played in 1987. They last won
in 2010 in Toronto. ❑
