Walks To Cure Diabetes In Two Locations Sunday When Janice and Steve Traison's daughter Randi was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at age 4, they felt devastated and lost. After becoming connected with JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) they decided to get active, taking part in the foundation's annual Walk to Cure Diabetes. Randi of West Bloomfield now is as independent as ever, striving to be active like her two older sisters, Rebecca and Elizabeth. In 2011, Randi organized a com- munity service project at her school to raise awareness for T1D and raised more than $1,000 that con- tributed to the almost $90,000 her family has raised for the cause. Every day, Randi inspires her fam- ily and friends with her persever- ance and dedication to helping find a cure for diabetes. Of the approximately 80 people per day who are diagnosed with THURSDAY, OCT. 4 LLOYD CARR SPEAKS 6 pm. See ex-U-M football coach at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland fundraiser at Townsend Hotel, Birmingham. Dr. Harold and Lynne Portnoy will be honored. He is a retired neurosurgeon and former chief of staff. She is a former pediatric nurse. $350. Tickets: 248-858-3161. T1D, half are children. The onset isn't caused by diet or lifestyle, but strikes suddenly, changing a person's life forever as incorrectly counting sugar and carbs can have devastat- ing effects. On Sunday, Sept. 23, Randi and her family will take part in a JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with 7,500 others who are raising funds to support research for a cure. Walkers will take either a 1.5 mile walk at the GM Tech Center in Warren or a 5K stroll through Hudson Mills Metropark near Ann Arbor. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The walks begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m. Walkers can register at walk.jdrf. org. There is no registration fee, but participants are encouraged to raise pledges to support research. Walkers raising $100 or more will receive a JDRF Walk T-shirt the day of the event. Walkers raising $200 or more are eligible for prizes ranging from JDRF branded merchandise to electronics, toys and housewares.
