section of Akiva Hebrew Day School became a makeshift millinery shop on
Sept. 2, with a display of hats of various sizes and a multitude of colors and
fabrics. Shoppers came to the annual Friends of Akiva pre-Rosh Hashanah
sale to try on and purchase items brought in by Hedy Needle of Hedy's Hat Rack of
New York.

"Friends of Akiva provides scholarships and funds that enhance academic and
athletic programs," said Cillia Kleiman of Southfield, the group's chairperson. "It is
supported by alumni, grandparents, parents and [others] who appreciate and support
Akiva's unique voice in the Detroit community." Proceeds from the sale went to the
Southfield-based school's "Lead the Way" tuition fundraising campaign.
"Hedy Needle has been in business for over 35 years and is a real hat expert, and she
helped with the selections," Kleiman said. "The hat sale has been going on for more
than 14 years and it's always fun." 11

Donning hats at the sale are Hedy Needle of Hedy's Hat Rack, Tali Bacaner of
