S ix years ago, Paul Fried of Farmington Hills discov- ered Get Your Guts In Gear (GYGIG), which hosts long-distance cycling events around the country each year. The White Plains, N.Y.- based organization strives to empower people with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and related conditions to com- plete a physically demanding, multiday bicycle ride while raising money for inflammatory bowel disease charities. After finishing a 216-mile ride in Seattle in 2007, Fried, a certified public accountant, found cycling to be a passion. Medical complications relating to Crohn's prevented him from competing in another GYGIG long- distance ride the next year. That was his catalyst for starting a local cycling event to benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). The fifth annual Paul Fried Charity Ride to Support the CCFA, held Aug. 4 on a rolling, wooded 25-mile course at Kensington Metropark near Milford, raised at least $11,000; 81 cyclists, walkers and volunteers participated. Fried wants to generate at least $100,000 in total accumulated dona- tions for the CCFA. His event so far has brought in nearly $60,000. "As important as the financial goal is to me," he said, "it is equally important to be able to empower local individu- als suffering with Crohn's or colitis to challenge themselves by completing a 25-mile bike ride and experience, even to a smaller degree, the same sense of accomplishment I felt after completing my first long-distance event."
