Mastocytosis Benefit Recalls Young Victim Sarah Gittleman was a typical 23-year-old. A Michigan State graduate in accounting, she was planning to become a CPA. Sarah was a young, bright, kindhearted, ambitious, hardworking over- achiever, full of energy, enthusi- asm. She loved to joke and laugh but most of all she loved her life, family and friends. Sarah developed a very aggressive form of Mastocytosis, caused by an overabundance of mast cells in the body, and under- Sarah went a stem-cell Gittleman transplant donat- ed by her sister Laura. Sarah, however, died on Dec. 21, 2004, less than one year after being diagnosed. The slightly more than 1-mile walk for the Mastocytosis Society not only remembers Sarah but now has about 10 people from the greater Detroit area coming to the walk who have some form of Mastocytosis. Recognizing this, people who are struggling to sur- vive on a daily basis brings even more meaning and commitment to this very important cause. This year's event will be Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Huntington Woods Recreation Center, 26325 Scotia. Registration is 9:15 a.m. The walk starts at 10. The Pink Fund assists those suf- fering from breast cancer to focus on healing, raising their families and returning to the workplace.
