emple Emanu-El will dedicate

a beautiful mosaic tile collage
on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the first
day of religious school and the congre-
gation's Family of Families Picnic. This
creative and sacred event reflects the
work of hundreds of temple children
and families as a celebration of Emanu-
El's 60th anniversary.
The dedication of the mosaic will
reveal a Jewish image that will fill the
walls of the religious school with collec-
tive beauty and individual expression.
The image incorporates more than 100
mosaic tiles, each personally designed.
Education Director Geoff Berdy said,
"We wanted our families to make their
own permanent mark on our build-
ing to demonstrate their connection
to Jewish values, so we asked folks to
derive inspiration from our religious
school motto 'Torah, Avodah, Gemilut
Chesed: Tradition, Spirituality, Ethics:
Live It, Learn It, Love It Lifelong.
"The funding for the project
was made possible through the
Congregational School Initiative and
the Hermelin-Davidson Center for
Congregational Excellence and the

facilitation of Federation's Affiance for
Jewish Education," he added.
Artist and temple member Mary
Gilhuly orchestrated a series of work-
shops last semester to lead the Jewish
art project. "Students, families, faculty
and clergy participated in this inter-
generational expression," she said. "I
think it's amazing that the youngest
participant was age 2 and the oldest
were almost 90:'
Gilhuly has composed all these indi-
vidual tiles into a beautifully designed
collage, representing an open Torah
scroll and the school motto in Hebrew.
The University of Michigan a capella
singers Kol HaKavod will help dedicate
the mosaic at the Family of Families
Picnic. All events are free.
Temple Emanu-El invites prospective
members to attend Sunday at 11 a.m.
The picnic includes food, games, enter-
tainment and activities: a "Temple Time
Capsule," an intergenerational volleyball
game, a clown and magic show, bouncy
house, and music by Jamie Schultz and
Andrew Young. Social action activities,
such as tie-dyeing, and Community
Garden activities are also provided.
