and older students can elect to take
Hebrew for college credit. Some
Shabbat dinners are held on the east
side of Metro Detroit. The temple
also has a student radio station and
an investment club.
"The acknowledgement has been
made that we need to do more to
engage our kids to make them part
of this community and want to be
part of this community. Everyone is
coming together to make good Jews:'
she said.
"Quality education depends on
drawing together students, parents,
teachers and curriculum:' said Elliot
Pachter, rabbi at B'nai Moshe. "CSI 2
has pushed us to think about ways
these necessary components can
work together toward a more sub-
stantial and rewarding 'whole:
"Putting clergy, educators, parents,
synagogue leaders and even two
high school students around the
same table has propelled us to work
hard to recognize our strengths and
work hard to improve upon our
deficiencies:'
Gail Gales, B'nai Moshe education
director, said, "We're totally focused
on family education and incorporate
experiential learning in every class-
room and family education program.
The teachers are onboard, and we
are seeing worthwhile results with
positive comments from parents
who have told me their children
have shared that they were happy
doing 'X' program or activity in class.
Enthusiasm is going home"
Parental involvement is crucial,
say those involved in CSI2 .
"The real truth for me is that
whenever you have interested,
involved and engaged parents not
only focused on learning but on
building a community of friends
around the experience, things will
be really exciting," said Magy of
Adat Shalom.
"Is CSI2 good? I don't really know
yet:' he said. "I can tell you the pro-
cess is good, and we've increased
our likelihood of success, but noth-
ing bad can come from it. Let's see
next year if we are successful and
what other lessons we've learned.
"I am really pleased with what
the Alliance is doing. This is a real
commitment to temples and syna-
gogues in our community.
"The AJE is not just throwing
money at the problem, but is mak-
ing sure there are quality profes-
sionals available as resources to
synagogues, not telling them what
to teach and how, but to look inside
themselves to see what is important
to them and to help them accom-
plish their own goals." E
