1-4-1 in Houston, but there were some
memorable moments.
In a 3-3 time-limit tie with Los
Angeles Westside, an unusual double
play by Detroit preserved the tie and
ended the game.
With one out, the bases loaded
and Aaron Moskovitz working on
the mound in relief of starter Zach
Resnick, Moskovitz got the batter to
hit a grounder to third base.
A throw home to catcher Jordan
Gal resulted in a force out. Gal threw
to shortstop Eric Dworman, who was
alertly covering third, and he tagged
out the runner.
Detroit's lone win was a 5-2 victory
over Baltimore. Winning pitcher Steve
Saham threw a complete game with
eight strikeouts and he drove in two
runs with a pair of doubles.
Ethan Freedman's squeeze bunt
scored a run, and h:!. scored himself
when he stole home on the back end
of a delayed double steal. Moskovitz
had an RBI single.
The win over Baltimore, in Detroit's
first tournament game after a 0-3-1
record in pool play, sent Detroit
against top-seeded and undefeated
Houston, which eventually won the
gold medal. Houston broke away from
a 3-3 tie and won 7-3 in Detroit's third
game on a 100-degree, humid day.

Detroit coach Jim Dworman said his
team didn't play well during the week,
but there were extenuating circum-
stances.
"We were 15-year-olds playing in a
16-year-old division:' he said.
Here's Detroit's roster, including
high schools: Spencer Applebaum
(Cranbrook-Kingswood), Jack
Blumberg (Cranbrook-Kingswood),
Eric Dworman (Walled Lake Central),
Freedman (WL Central), Gal (WL
Central), Jake Hartje (Detroit Country
Day), Moskovitz (West Bloomfield),
Jonah Newman (Bloomfield Hills
Andover), Resnick (Birmingham
Groves), Saham (Roeper), Dean Sallan
(Frankel Jewish Academy) and Max
Singer (West Bloomfield).

'Hot, Hot, Hot'
Stuart Bass, Detroit's delegation head
in Houston, said Detroit bowlers Sarah
Hoberman and Shlomo Honig each
won three gold medals, and table
tennis players Ryan Martin and Ian
Saham also won medals. Martin won
two golds and one silver, and Saham
won a silver.
"We brought 32 athletes. The weath-
er was hot, hot, hot, but all of our
athletes had a great time," Bass said.
"They had a good Jewish experience
in Hang Time, and they participated
in JCC Cares, spending several hours
with young campers.
"The games were a success and an
experience our kids will remember for
a long time."
Hang Time is a place where
Maccabi athletes can go to learn
about Israel, Jewish life and Jewish
history through informal activities
with other athletes. ❑
