Remembering Israel's
Poet Laureate
A group of Hebrew
poetry lovers will gather
for an informal evening
of remembrance and
appreciation to mark the
12th yahrzeit of Israel's
modern poet laureate,
Yehuda Amichai, at 7

The event will take place
at a private home in

West Bloomfield and is open to the com-
munity at no charge. The poetry soiree
will be facilitated by Ahuva Newman, a
longtime local Hebrew educator. She will
lead the group in reading and discussing a
selection of Amichai's poems (in Hebrew,
with English translation provided), togeth-
er with an appreciation of the man, his
philosophy and his life.

Weekly Torah Study
At Adat Shalom
Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills will offer free Torah study programs
on Wednesdays and Shabbat for the com-
ing year.
The weekly Wednesday program will
be 10-11 a.m. Fall sessions will be led
by Rabbi Aaron Bergman in September,
Rabbi Rachel Shere in October and Melissa
Ser, director of congregational learning, in

Indie Film Has
Michigan Ties
The film WaterWalk opens Saturday, Aug.
25, at the Birmingham 8 theater. Its direc-
tor and star, Robert Cicchini, will intro-
duce the 7 p.m. event and host a talkback.
He will be joined by cinematographer
Bruce Schermer and producer/screen-
writer Roger Rapoport. They all grew up
in the Detroit area.
The made-in-Michigan feature runs
through Aug. 31 with special events fea-
turing the cast and production team every
night.
Cicchini, who began his career on the
Wayne State University stage, plays Steve
Faulkner, who decides to take the journey
of a lifetime with his teenage son. With only
an afternoon's paddling experience, they
attempt to become the first single canoe
team to retrace the 1,000-mile Marquette/
Joliet discovery route of the Mississippi from
St. Ignace, Mich., to St. Louis.
Faulkner, the author of the book that
inspired the film,will appear Aug. 27-29 at
the theater.
Rapoport will appear on Sunday, Aug.
26. In addition, a behind-the-scenes
presentation on the making of the film
will take place on Aug. 30 with Michigan
cinematographers Bruce Schermer and Ed
DeJong.

Michigan-Israel Business
Bridge Hosts Speakers
Limor Nakar-Vincent, director of U.S.
Business Development and BIRD Energy
for the BIRD Foundation, will speak at
a Michigan Israel Business Bridge net-
working event 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept.
6, at the MIBB offices, 6735 Telegraph, in
Bloomfield Township.
Founded in 1977, the US-Israel
Bi-national Industrial Research and
Development (BIRD) Foundation sup-
ports joint Israeli-American development
projects in the various areas of technology
without receiving any rights in the partici-
pating companies or in the project itself.
The foundation provides support of up
to 50 percent of a project's budget, begin-
ning with R&D and ending with the initial
stages of sales and marketing.
There will be a case study presented by
MIBB board member Steve LeBeau. Yariv
Becher, consul for the economic affairs for
Israel's Economic Mission to the Midwest,
will speak on the successful business
development ongoing between Michigan
and Israel.
