Walk Off Wonders
It's on to the 34th annual International
Jewish Men's Slo-Pitch Softball
Tournament over Labor Day weekend
in Novi for 13 players on the champion
Diversified Benefits team in the West
Bloomfield Class C Thursday Night
League.
Twelve will play for the six-time
tournament champion Motor City
Hit Men. Justin Fisher will help the
Minneapolis All-Stars fill out their
roster.
Diversified Benefits won the West
Bloomfield league's regular-season title
when it defeated DABCO 22-12 in a
winner-take-all game that had been
postponed by rain opening night.
Its run to the league's playoff cham-
pionship was even more memorable.
After beating Hit or Miss 15-8 in

-

its playoff opener, Diversified Benefits
won semifinal and championship
games in walk-off style on the same
night.
"I can't explain it — it was an
extraordinary season:' said manager
Rick Sherline, who also manages the
Hit Men. "The stars lined up for us:'
Diversified Benefits beat the Mad
Bombers 9-8 and DABCO 19-18 in the
semifinals and finals, respectively. In
both games, the score was tied heading
into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lyle Schaefer was the hero of the
Mad Bombers game. His one-out,
bases-loaded single scored Roger
Davenport from third base.
The win over DABCO was even
more dramatic. After the first two bat-
ters had been retired, Todd Kaluzny
launched a game- and championship-
winning home run over the centerfield
fence that traveled more than 300 feet.
