wake up in a fog. CNN is still
on the TV as a carryover from
falling asleep six hours past
when I went to bed. I see the
"Breaking News" white letters
across the bottom of the screen
as I reach for my glasses to see
what event is now grasping the
attention of the day. My mind
immediately
registers
caution — a
plane down,
a major
shooting,
a terrorist
attack or
some form
of scandal
instanta-

the range
of plausible
outcomes in the two seconds it

stage, the recognized leaders all
join hands and flash smiles from
ear to ear.

with breaking news on the home
front."
Desperate to reach the bath-
room and then the kitchen for
a cup of coffee, I freeze, waiting
for the next news flash and to
gain some facts on the news in
the Mideast. Wolf says it straight
out; the leaders of the House
and Senate — Republican and
Democrat, along with the Obama
Administration — have reached
agreement on healthcare, deficit
reduction, military spending,
social reforms and taxes. Their
joint statement affirms the bud-
