on't expect them to throw
diamonds to the crowd, but
the Tapper brothers of jewelry
store fame will be grand marshals of
the 10th annual W. J. & Lillian Kemler
Walk of Ages Sunday, Aug. 26. Detroit
Jewish News columnist Danny Raskin
is grand marshal emeritus.
The 3K/5K community walk will
go around the Applebaum Jewish
Community Center campus in West
Bloomfield, with the Tappers leading
the way. The event is sponsored by the
Jewish Senior Life Auxiliary to raise
funds for programs to support Jewish
older adults — about 900 of them liv-
ing in six residences.
Howard and Steven Tapper operate
Tapper's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in
West Bloomfield, Somerset Mall and
Twelve Oaks Mall. Howard is CEO and
Steven is vice president.
Both individually and through the
business, they are regarded as dedi-
cated and creative members of the
community, supporting many local
Jewish causes, Jewish education and
Israel; they also have demonstrated a
strong commitment to the arts. The
Tappers serve on numerous boards
and committees.
Charitable causes they support
include Kids Kicking Cancer, JARC,
JFS, Alternatives for Girls, Detroit
Public Schools, funding of AIDS
prevention programs in Africa, and
collecting coats and prom dresses for
needy children.
"We're committed to giving back to
the community' Steven Tapper said.
"We're going to celebrate what is good

V

in the community by being the grand
marshals in this year's walk. After all,
the seniors are the backbone of the
community; they helped build it. And
now, it's our pleasure to honor them."
The Walk of Ages begins at 10 a.m.,
rain or shine, preceded by registration
at 9 a.m. and a warm-up program at
9:30 a.m. A number of celebrity walk-
ers will participate, and refreshments
will be available at the finish line.
The walk festivities also will fea-
ture train rides, a petting zoo, face
painting and carnival games for
the children, with plenty of prizes.
Participants must register and pay
an entry fee of $18 per person in
advance or $20 on the day of the
walk; $36 in advance for families (up
to two adults and four children) or
$40 on walk day.
Team Spirit walkers pay $118 for a
team of five to nine walkers; $236 for a
team of 10 to 19 walkers, and $354 for
20-plus walkers.
Lawn signs expressing sentiments
for a family member or friend can be
displayed on a Dedication Lane along
the walk route for $180. (Deadline is
Aug. 15.)
Co-chairpersons for this year's Walk
of Ages are Wendy Heller Kippelman
of Bloomfield Hills, and Lori
Rubin and Linda Solomon of West
Bloomfield, all members of the JSL
Auxiliary, which has been caring for
Jewish senior adults for 86 years.
"We're excited about being able to
walk for older Jewish adults:' Steven
Tapper said. "Right now, we're just
practicing waving"
For further information on the walk,
call Judy Dunn, JSL Auxiliary coordi-
nator, at (248) 661-2969.
