This summer is just as exciting. The recent Detroit Country Day School graduate has begun what she hopes will be a successful career as a goalie with the Northwestern Rachel University women's Bergman soccer team in Evanston, Ill. "I'd love to play this season, of course, but there are three other goalies on the team, and two have played at the colle- giate level," she said. Bergman is the only freshman on Northwestern's goalie crew. Returning starter Anna Cassell is a sophomore. But there's a new coach at Northwestern, and that could benefit Bergman. Michael Moynihan, who turned the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee program into a powerhouse during his 15 years as coach there, was hired in December. And the Northwestern Wildcats didn't exactly set the women's soccer world on fire last season. They finished 2-16-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the Big Ten Conference, in last place. Northwestern will play three straight games on the road — Aug. 19 vs. Kansas, Aug. 24 vs. Miami (Ohio) and Aug. 26 vs. Dayton — before its home opener Aug. 31 vs. Marquette. The Wildcats' Big Ten opener is home Sept. 14 vs. Nebraska. Some Northwestern games are tele- vised on the Big Ten Network. This season's broadcast schedule hasn't been released. Bergman was considered one of the top high school goalies in the state when she played at Country Day. She started for the Yellowjackets for three seasons after transferring from Bloomfield Hills Andover. After advancing to the state semifi- nals in 2011, Country Day was stunned 1-0 this season by Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the district finals. "That was a tough loss, but it would have been worse if I didn't have college to look forward to," Bergman said. Bergman played club soccer with the Michigan Hawks and Vardar, helping the Hawks win a state championship in 2009. She also participated in state and region Olympic development programs. The West Bloomfield resident chose Northwestern not just for the opportu- nity to play soccer at a Division I level. She also found it a good fit academically. Her career goal is to become a surgeon. Country Day's tough academic stan- dards were no match for Bergman, who graduated magna cum laude with a 3.85 grade point average.
