Jackie Headapohl Managing Editor W hen that thermom- eter is hovering north of the 90-degree mark, a cool treat is just what the doctor ordered. You can head to Just Peachy Frozen Yogurt and Custard in West Bloomfield, on Orchard Lake Road and Lone Pine. The self-serve sweet shop, owned and operated by Temple Israel mem- bers Steve and Melissa Morris, opened June 19, and business has been brisk. Steve Morris is managing partner at Mohr Partners, a Farmington Hills- based commercial real estate firm. He opened Just Peachy as a family busi- ness, a place where daughters Alexa, 16, and Arielle, 14, could learn the value of hard work. "From an entrepreneurial stand- point, the girls are learning how a business is run and the value of a dol- lar," Steve said. Melissa Morris agrees. "They're serving customers, helping behind the scenes, cleaning and testing products." Testing products isn't a bad gig. Dozens of flavors of frozen yogurt are available from Banana Royale to Cake Batter and Texas Peanut Butter to name a few. New flavors appear every other week. Choose from custard, non-fat yogurt, no-sugar added yogurt and all- natural fruit puree. Soon, a dairy-free vegan product also will be available. Fresh fruit toppings are made daily as are the waffle cones, and custom- ers have a smorgasbord of toppings available and several delicious syrups, including a hot peanut butter sauce, to choose from. Treats are sold by weight (47 cents/ounce). It's fun to create your own delicious sundae, and Just Peachy has "recipe" contests on its Facebook page if you want to submit your cre- ation. Melissa Morris, a former stay-at- home mom, runs the shop along with general manager and longtime friend DeAnn Lutz, whose daughter Sophie, 11, looks forward to working there as well one day. The Morrises studied trends before opening Just Peachy, and hit on self- serve frozen yogurt, which originally started in California. "There was noth- ing like it around here:' Steve Morris said. Employees at Friedman Integrated Real Estate in Farmington Hills enjoyed a visit from Just Peachy on Aug. 3 with pre-swirled yogurt and custard along with a variety of fruit and dry toppings.
