Reunion Set

orthwest Detroit's
Arthur H. Vandenberg
Elementary will be the
setting for an all-school reunion
for students who attended during
the 1950s and 1960s. The get-
together will take place at 7 p.m.
on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the school,
now the Jalen Rose Leadership
Academy (JRLA).
Vandenberg, named after the
U.S. senator from Michigan who
served from 1928 to 1951, opened
on Feb. 1, 1954, near Eight Mile and
James Couzens Highway.
Former classmate Cheryl Klein
Glass, now living in Florida, created
a Facebook page for Vandenberg
four years ago. The site became so
popular among alumni that an All-
School reunion began. Karen Natow
Disner, Marjorie Silver Stern and
Jeffrey Michlin, all 1964 alums, and
Jacki Kress Boyer (1966) grabbed
the planning reins.
"In fact, except for new updated
lighting, plumbing and paint," says
Disner, "the school is exactly the
same — charming and wonderful!"
Permission came from the prin-
cipal as well as Jalen Rose (the
former University of Michigan and
National Basketball Association
star) and JRLA co-founder Michael
Carter (Pinnacle Construction
Partners in Tennessee).
Other reunion committee mem-
bers include Jay Mellin (1964),
Sue Shifman Lefkofsky (1966),
Rita Fink Winer (1966), Michael
Zacks (1963), Eileen Miller Greener
(1965) and Rosalyn Rosenberg
Hertzberg (1964) with assistance
from Howard Green (1962),
Jane Schelberg (1966) and Carol
Eichenhorn Stoller (1963).
Nearly 300 attendees are expect-
ed from all over the United States,
including Hawaii, as well as from
Brazil and Singapore.
