Dear Voters,
I want to express how important it is to have fair judges in our
local courts. District Court Judges have the potential to affect
us, loved ones and our friends. They can have great
impact on our everyday lives. The only way for you to ensure
proper decision making is to vote August 7th. I understand
voting takes valuable time out of your day. Just the same if you
don't vote your voice will NOT be heard. I ASK THAT YOU VOTE
FOR ME. I AM FAIR. THERE WILL BE NO UNDERDOG IN MY COURT.
August 7 is the date. From 7am to 8pm. I thank you in advance
for planning to get out on August 7 and voting for me, I am the
best candidate for Judge of the 48th District Court.

Running Bases
Boyhood friends reconnect on the
ball field for annual tournament.
F
or the third straight year, a
"Field of Dreams Softball
Tournament" held July 28 at
Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield
is still creating a buzz in the commu-
nity.
The tournament started two years
ago when Sheldon Rosenberg and Joel
Noble came up with a simple idea to
get a few guys together to have a small
pick-up softball game. That idea has
evolved into a special reunion that
keeps on growing.
"Like most guys our age (50-65
years old), we grew up as kids playing
baseball every day in the summer:'
Rosenberg said. "We'd ride our bikes
to the ball field, pick teams, play a
game in the morning, go to lunch, play
a game in the afternoon and then go
home for dinner. It was an everyday
summer ritual."
In later years, these "boys of sum-
mer" played on high school teams and,
ultimately, graduated to softball. In the
late 1960s and 1970s, their hometown
of Oak Park became a mecca for soft-
ball in the state. Professional softball
teams competed alongside top-notch
local teams.
"Oak Park softball was so much fun
for us as players and the Detroit com-
munity as a whole Rosenberg said. "It
was the place to be on the weekends!'
Despite not having seen some of
their fellow players in 40 years, this
group has reconnected with a com-
munity that had deeper roots than
anyone realized. This year, more than
150 former players and friends were
contacted to play in this one-day tour-
nament.
Captains Joey Minc, Larry Sherman,
Neil Weiner and David Wiener drafted
players. Four teams were created to
compete for the 2012 championship.
Some former Oak Parkers traveled
far distances to participate and watch
the games. These included former
Harvard hockey star Larry Desmond
(Arizona), Jeff Wiener (Florida) and
Zeeda (Kopel) Mavian (Ohio).
"Though the ball may not travel as
far, the legs don't run as fast, and the
arms don't throw as hard, the competi-
tiveness remains strong;' a player said.
The crowd of spectators saw out-
standing hitting and fielding on this
sun-filled day. They even had a DJ
spinning old tunes the entire time.
One special highlight was 54-year-old
Lyle Schaefer belting a 300-foot-plus
home run for Team Weiner, champions
of the tournament.
"It was truly a great day to be a kid
again," Rosenberg said. ❑
