ECONOMY HERE AND NOW Breathing New Life New local boutiques, businesses and brands you may not know — but should. By Lynne Konstantin 708:722 N. Oi l) WooDwARD I BIRMINGHAM 1 48009 I 248.723.4300 I Rom \spos.\.com Carpenter is a natural-born entrepreneur. Thirty years ago, the West Bloomfield wife and mom ran a small children's resale shop in Water- ford before becoming a popular local makeup artist. After raising her two sons, Carpenter became a local celeb after growing her independent baking business, Polly's Pastries, into a sucessful brand, exclusive to Hiller's Markets and often showcased on Fox 2 News. Fans flocked to her for homemade banana loaves, lemon bars, babka and mandel bread, which, through word-of-mouth she was told, customers heard was the best they'd ever tasted. And again through word-of-mouth, the businesswoman's newest venture is thriving, though it only opened early in July. A"retail nut," she says, Carpenter has come full circle with Polly's ReStyle Shoppe, a lively resale boutique brim- ming with clothing, accessories and gifts for women who want high fashion at affordable prices. "I love that you can snatch up an item that you love for about a quarter of the price of retail," says Carpenter. "I wanted to offer that to local women:' Brimming with labels including Ralph Lauren, Betsey Johnson, Ann Taylor, Ellen Tracy and Victoria's Secret, most pieces, which range from sizes 0 to plus, average around $10-$14, and nothing is more than $60. Costume jewelry, scarves, pajamas and robes, bags and more fill out the shop. Adding life to a quiet little shop- ping strip in West Bloomfield, Car- penter wanted a spot that was easily accessible with ample parking. "The women can't believe the prices," says Carpenter, who buys items as needed, as opposed to consignment, so she can keep prices low. "The response has been fantastic." 27 Polly's ReStyle Shoppe, 5548 Drake Road, West Bloomfield; (248) 788-1440. YENTA UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS News and info from around town.
