HMC to sponsor
Wallenberg events
T
he Holocaust Memorial
Center in Farmington Hills
will present a special exhibit
and a week of programs, July 29-Aug.
5, honoring Swedish diplomat and
Holocaust hero Raoul Wallenberg.
HMC admission for the week is
complimentary; donations accepted.
Celebrating the centennial of
Wallenberg's birth, the events focus
on the life, courage and Michigan
connections of a major hero of
the Holocaust who rescued tens of
thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied
Hungary. While serving as Sweden's
special envoy in•Budapest between
July and December 1944, Wallenberg
issued protective passports and shel-
tered Jews in buildings designated
as Swedish territory. In 1945, he was
detained by Soviet authorities on
suspicion of espionage and subse-
quently disappeared.
