he baby boom generation
is the largest in U.S. his-
tory, with more than 77
million people born between 1946
and 1964. Baby boomers are also
unique because they came of age
during the unprecedented econom-
ic expansion after World War II.
While previous generations
tended to live near employment
centers, new suburban housing
developments required frequent,
long-distance trips by car.
Cars became an essential compo-
nent of daily life, not a luxury. With
rising life expectancies, America's
largest generation also will be
the oldest ever. Inevitably, aging
experts note, a large share will out-
live their ability to drive safely by
seven to 10 years.
Without affordable travel
options, seniors face isolation, a
reduced quality of life and possible
economic hardship. This poses
challenges to seniors who may
otherwise be able to stay in their
homes, but who need to find trans-
portation for health care, errands
out of the house and socializing.
To help out, the Area Agency
on Aging I-B, in partnership
with Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit and other
area providers, will offer a new
free service. My Ride 2 is a pro-
gram funded through a federal
grant with a state match and is
available to all seniors and adults
with disabilities or special needs
in Oakland and Macomb coun-
ties, who can now request a ride
through the program's website or
by phone. They will be matched
with the best providers and offered
choices to meet their mobility
management needs.
Through the grant, JFS' transpor-
tation program has expanded its
operational hours.
JFS' transportation program pro-
vides thousands of rides annually
to more than 1,000 clients for med-
ical appointments, social services,
grocery shopping and community
programs, allowing older adults to
age in place and retain their quality
of life. The program provides door-
through-door service to assist pas-
sengers who need help out of the
car and through the door at their
destination.
