A special education teacher for 30 years, Mr. May, in 1994, founded Rick May's All-Star Camp, a nonprofit summer camp for adults with special needs to con- tinue their emotional and physi- cal growth under the direction of trained staff. The camp is located at Lamphere Center in Madison Heights and the staff is comprised of schoolteachers, retired teachers, paraprofessionals, music therapists, certified exercise Rick May instructors and Detroit Opera House instructors. The camp is open to adults, starting at age 17. As a musician, Rick played the trumpet. He also blew the shofar at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy, which was recorded so that shut- ins could hear the shofar during the High Holidays. He played a variety of music, but for the last 10 years he spent most of his time with klezmer music and started the Schmaltz Klezmer Band, which played at assisted liv- ing facilities, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings and at retirement homes. An active member and volun- teer at Congregation Shir Tikvah, he taught Jewish music classes; played once a month at a musical Shabbat service; and assisted with the South Oakland Shelter, where Congregation Shir Tlkvah opened its doors as a homeless shelter for needy individuals and families. Mr. May also helped with children with special needs at the congrega- tion's school and always showed up when the congregation needed volunteers. He was also an avid bike rider and loved to tinker with cars. Mr. May is sur- vived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce May; mother, Sylvia May of Florida; sons, Kenneth May of Honolulu, Hawaii, Scott May of Plymouth and Andrew May of Oak Park; daughters and son-in-law, Amanda May of Williamsburg, Ky., Tana and Chris Brozik of Oak Park; brother, Ira May of Florida; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcia and Harley Adler of Florida, Michelle May-Walt and David Walt of Boston, Mass.; grandchildren, Maura May, Allyah May, Alexzander May, Brianna May, Chloe May; many nieces, nephews, other rela- tives and devoted friends.
