Dedicated to imaginative programming,
conductor joins annual festival.

C onductor/musician Eric
Jacobsen is on the road again,
this time for the fortunate
Metro Detroiters who'll attend the 20th
annual Concert of Colors, the free sum-
mer music festival in the city's Midtown
neighborhood, set for July 12-15.
New Yorker Jacobsen, who conducts
and plays the cello with several musical
groups during his approximately 100
appearances a year around the globe,
will be guest conductor of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday, July 15, at Orchestra Hall. Also
featured will be artist Wu Man playing
the pipa, an ancient Chinese instrument.
Jacobsen is known for his imagina-
tive programs that "invite the audience
into a shared experience' This time
the crowd will experience the "excit-
ing works of Beethoven, Debussy and
Dvorak, plus some surprises:' confided
Jacobsen as he relaxed in Lenox, Mass.,
where he was performing in cellist Yo-Yo
Ma's 15-member Silk Road Project at
the Tanglewood Music Festival.
"I'm on the road somewhere around
the world for seven months a year:' said
Jacobsen, who is 29 and single, "so it's
refreshing to play at 'home' in places like
Tanglewood and Detroit for what I call
the hometown audiences."
Jacobsen's Jewish heritage comes
from his late mother, Ivy Goldfarb, who
played the flute. His father, Edmund
Jacobsen, is a Norwegian who retired
after 30 years as a violinist with the New
York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
At 4 and tall for his age, Eric Jacobsen
took on an instrument even bigger than
he was — the cello, although he trained
on the viola first. With his brother, Colin,
now 33, playing the violin, the family
quartet had "jam" sessions in their Great
Neck, Long Island, home.
"We would eat, drink and play beauti-
ful music," Jacobsen reminisced, "and
my brother and I have continued that in
our careers.
"Great Neck is about as big of a
Jewish community as any in the United
States, and we shared all of the Jewish
traditions and holidays, like Passover,
with our Jewish friends and neighbors:'
he said. "All of the cultures in the 'com-
munity came together under one holi-
day umbrella."
Jacobsen graduated from the Juilliard
School of Music and literally hit the
road. For three months of the year, he

travels with a group called the Knights,
which sounds like a rock quartet but is
actually a 45-member orchestra that he
and Colin formed to "bring the intimacy
and camaraderie of chamber music to
the orchestra stage'
Also for three months, he tours with
a string quartet named the Brooklyn
Rider, which he founded.
"The names of these groups represent
our ideology, giving us the freedom
to perform entirely different types of
music:' he said.
Jacobsen has conducted or played
in almost every major city in North
America, Europe and Asia, and also
spends a lot of time in the recording
studio. He teaches cello and chamber
music at New York University, where he
also conducts the NYU Orchestra.
The Concert of Colors began as a
single-day event at Detroit's Chene Park
and has evolved into a major, multi-
venue festival that celebrates cultural
diversity through music."
At 8:15 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at
Orchestra Hall, one of the Detroit
area's favorite musical sons, Don Was
(Fagenson), returns to the festival to
.
mark the fifth anniversary of his Detroit
All-Star Revue. The group will switch
from its typically rock-heavy lineup to
spotlight hometown jazz greats. ❑
