Dr. Lynda Giles speaks to Birthright participants at Independence Hall
in Tel Aviv.

of the young adults applying for
this trip are accepted. While they
are encouraged to reapply for
a variety of reasons, less than
one quarter do. Clearly, that is
a lost opportunity for both the
individual and our community.
What is required is a broad,
global philanthropic effort to per-
mit all Jewish young adults to par-
ticipate in Birthright. Funding for
Taglit Birthright Israel comes from
three sources. The first is the
National Birthright Foundation,
which runs the national campaign.
The second stream of funding
comes from the North American
Jewish federations. The third
source is a challenge grant of
$100 million over three years from
the government of Israel.
Not surprisingly, Detroit has
been ahead of the curve in its
fundraising efforts. Over the
last three years, three donor
events have been held under
the leadership of Greg Orley and
David Schostak as co-chairs,
and Stacy Brodsky and Sue
Kaufman as event chairs. All of
their efforts have been supported

by the generous hospitality of
Elise and David Schostak, Karen
Davidson, and Susie and David
Sillman. In addition, the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit has actively supported
and assisted in these events.
Some $1.5 million was raised,
enabling our community to accept
a greater number of Michigan
youths on a Birthright Israel trip.
Our first national donor mis-
sion held June 1-8 was motivated
by a need to meet the increased
demand by young diaspora Jews
to be part of Taglit Birthright
Israel. Donors on our trip were
inspired by the young adults they
met and more than doubled their
financial commitment.
This donor mission was clearly
successful! Yet it must be con-
sidered just a beginning in our
efforts to enlarge our donor
base. Until the Jewish community
meets the goal of enabling every
young adult to exercise his/her
birthright, our job is not done. FE
