obituaries Obituaries from page 49 CHAJA CHERNY, 93 of West Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2012. She was born Chaja Hochberg on March UST v>v oR 5, 1919, in Sokolov Podlaski, Poland. She had one sister, two brothers and many aunts, uncles and cousins throughout Poland. She and her brother Srul were the only members of her family to survive the Holocaust. She married the love of her life, Sigmund Czerniewicz (later changed to Cherny) in 1937. When war broke out, Chaja and her 1 1/2-year old son Harold fled to Russia, where they survived six years of forced labor and unmention- able hardships. By God's hand, she was reunited with her husband (after he sur- vived several concentration camps and fought with Polish partisans) in 1946. After time in a DP camp, they settled in Cham, Germany, and had a son, Seymour, in 1948. In 1949, they were able to immi- grate to the United States and settle in Detroit and later Oak Park, where they had two daughters, Fran and Sandi. She enjoyed her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and working for 12 years at Bloom's Kosher Catering in Oak Park. She was a wonderful cook and the family enjoyed her traditional Jewish delicacies at every holiday. Mrs. Cherny is survived by daughters and sons-in law Sandi and Joel Felsenfeld of Commerce Twp., Fran and Jeff Israel of Wixom; son and daughters-in-law, Harold and Flora Cherny, and Karen Cherny, all of West Bloomfield; grandchil- dren, Lauri and Jeff Schwalb, Terri and Mark Rottenberg, Marci and Jeff Graff, Shanon and Fred Stibor, Mindy and Jim Schnieder, Zander and Kelly Waldman, Kim Cherny and her fiance Adam Stern, Scott and Brett Felsenfeld; great-grand- children, Brenden and Mason Schnieder, Luke and Sydney Stibor, Chad, Cameron and Chloe Schwalb, Ryan and Rachel Graff, Jared and Olivia Rottenberg, and FRESH MARKET P01414441,4 Logan Waldman; niece, Nitza Skuri; nephew, Shimon Hochberg of Kiryat Ono, Israel; many great-nieces and great- nephews in Israel. She was born on July 4, 1922, and was the youngest of 10 children. She graduated from Detroit's Northern High School in 1940. She worked hard to give her young children a good life after the untimely death of her husband, Danny Kosofsky. Mrs. Goldsmith will be missed by her loving children, Susie (Robert) Sher of Phoenix, Ariz., Shelli (Larry) Bello of Coral Springs, Fla., and Bob Goldsmith of Detroit; grandchildren, Brad Sher, Wendy Sher, Jodie (Bill) Coffman, and Erica Bello; three great-grandchildren. RALPH ISENSTEIN, 94, of Sylvania, Ohio, died June 24, 2012. Born in 1917, Mr. Isenstein was a life- long resident of Toledo and a graduate of Woodward High School. He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He was an active member of the former Goodman-Goldstein Post of the VFW, Old Newsboys Association and R.A.C. He exercised regularly at the JCC and enjoyed attending programs offered by the local synagogues. He was a lifetime member of Congregation Etz Chayim. Mr. Isenstein worked for the Wabash Lagrange Steel Co. for more than 35 years. He ended his career as vice president of purchasing. Throughout his career and business travels, he met and became friends with many of his suppli- ers and customers. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen Isenstein; cherished father of Laura Isenstein (Jim Alsip) of Cottonwood, Ariz., and William (Sheryl) Isenstein of West Bloomfield; loving grandfather of Andrew (Michelle) Seff, Sarah (Jeffrey) Lewis, and Dana and Ellery Isenstein; great-grandfather of Jacob Lewis. He was the dear brother of the late Sam (Ethel) Isenstein and Victor (Mary) Isenstein. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
