Founded in 1952 as the Sinai Women's Auxiliary, the Guild began as a volunteer arm of Sinai Hospital and morphed over the years into a nonprofit organization. When Sinai Hospital closed 15 years ago, the Guild shifted its focus from volunteering to giving grants. "With our endowment background and fundraising initiatives, we were able to fine tune ourselves into a beautiful fundraising and grant-giving organization:' said President Rusty Rosman. Over the past 12 years, the Guild has raised and given more than $3.5 mil- lion in grants for medical research and equipment. Jewish organizations that benefited include Tamarack Camps, Project Chessed and Jewish Senior Life. It recently gave a gift to Hebrew Free Loan for dental and medical loans. "That gift is so wonderful because the money gets repaid, so it will keep going:' said Rosman. She said the Guild has not had a source of income since the hospital closed, and the downturn in the econ- omy affected its ability to fundraise. "We have found that we are no longer able to give grants as we have over the past 12 years:' Rosman said. "We are all so sad to see the Guild close, but at the same time we are all very proud to have been part of such an incredible organization that made a difference in our own backyard. It's been a privilege." A few of the Guild's grants included specialized robotic surgery equip- ment to Children's Hospital, a van to Kids Kicking Cancer and the first digital mammography machine to the Karmanos Cancer Center-Maisel Breast Suite in Farmington Hills. When the Guild gave a state-of-the- art CT scanner to HuronValley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, the hospital named its new medical office building after the organization as a sign of gratitude. In addition to giving grants, the Guild also has created and actively participated in major research proj- ects such as the national Sinai Guild Women's Heart Health study in sum- mer 2010 and an ovarian cancer study with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in 2004. Rose Rita Goldman, a past presi- dent, said, "The goal of the Guild was to continue the legacy of those who came before us and expand our reach even further, and I feel we accom- plished this. I'm sorry we have to leave, but I'll never forget what we did as far as healthcare and medical care in the community." At its end, the Guild had an execu- tive board consisting of 16 members and a general board of 60. "All of us have been together since 2001, and it's been the nicest, easiest, most delightful office to work in," said Rosman. "I'll miss the women and how well we work and think together." Executive Director Sandra Jaffa said, "Rusty was an incredible president. Her heart and drive helped propel this Guild, and under her leadership we've been like a little family. We have all worked very hard and collaboratively to make this work for this long:' ❑ The Sinai Guild is hosting a farewell brunch on July 11 at Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield.
