Column Made Case
For Freeing Pollard

Corrections

Robert Sklar's column on Jonathan
Pollard was very well done ("Time To
Let Pollard Go," June 21, page 28). I
don't understand why our government
continues to take such a hard line on
him.
Yes, Vice President Biden calls him a
traitor, but who pays any attention to
Biden? But maybe it goes much deeper
than we know.

Memories Of India
During World War II

The June 14 article regarding Jewish
India ("Spiritual Discovery," page 78)
was of great interest to me, since I was
stationed in Calcutta during World War
II at the 142nd General Hospital.
At that time, I knew of two syna-
gogues in Calcutta — Magen David and
Beth El. Both of which accepted service-
men with open arms. Also, a wealthy
Jewish family, Sir and Lady Ezra, held
open house for Jewish servicemen.

Lawsuit Unbecoming
Chabad Movement

I am appalled by public exposure of a
controversy between Chabad-Lubavitch
of Michigan and the Sara and Morris
Tugman Bais Chabad Tora Center of
West Bloomfield. Clearly washing dirty
laundry in public does not favor the
American Jewish community.
The attempt to grab the Torah Center
is a tyrannical action that does not
become the pious Chabad movement.
Chabad-Lubavitch of Michigan says
that it is not a question of money, yet we
are not naive enough to believe that.
It is not a dire need of the cultural
religious Chabad coming from a "center"
in Brooklyn. Suppose that somebody in
the Jewish Theological Seminary in New
York decides that Shaarey Zedek belongs
to its Conservative center? Than what?
The demands of Chabad-Lubavich
will kill donations to Chabad itself. Bais
Chabad Torah Center was built through
private gifts, not by the Lubavitch cen-
ter in Brooklyn. Having two Chabad
centers in Michigan will, and does,
create competition, which Rabbi Berel
Shemtov wants to suppress. Individual
Jewish projects such as Rabbi Elimelech
Silberberg's, who created the Torah
Center, must be supported, not
destroyed.
