The Ann
Arbor Summer
Festival presents
American-born,
Canadian-
raised Rufus
Wainwright, son of folksingers
Loudon Wainwright III and the late
Kate McCarrigle, at 8 p.m. Saturday,
June 30, at the Power Center in
Ann Arbor. Rufus, an acclaimed
singer-songwriter in his own right,
is known for his lush, piano-based
neo-cabaret pop ballads (as well as
his performances of the songs of
Judy Garland). In Ann Arbor, he'll
perform tunes from his new album,
Out of the Game — his "poppiest"
and "most danceable" album to
date — produced by acclaimed
British Jewish DJ and musician
Mark Ronson. Wainwright, who
is not Jewish, is openly gay and
the father of Viva Katherine
Wainwright Cohen, born Feb. 2,
2011, to photographer/videographer
Lorca Cohen, daughter of legendary
musician Leonard Cohen.
"Deputy Dad" is Rufus' fiance, Jorn
Weisbrodt. $30-$50. (734) 764-2538;

The Wall Street Journal has
described Bill Frisell as "the most
innovative and influential jazz
guitarist of the past 25 years."
On his September 2011 album,
All We Are Saying, which reached
the No. 1 position on Billboard's
Contemporary Jazz Chart, he
explores the music of John Lennon
— Beatles and post-Beatles.
"Everyone involved with this album
has their own personal, deep, long
relationship to John Lennon's
music:' said Frisell. "It connects
us all and brings us together."
Joining Frisell on the album are
frequent collaborators violin-
ist Jenny Scheinman (the Jewish
music-themed The Rabbi's Lover),
bassist Tony Scherr (a star side-
man who also collaborated on Steve
Bernstein's Diaspora Soul), pedal
steel player and guitarist Greg Leisz
(guitars) and drummer Kenny
Wollesen (founding member of the
New Klezmer Trio). Scherr, Leisz
and Wolleson join Frisell at 8 p.m.
Tuesday, July 3, at the Ark in Ann
Arbor for a performance of All We
Are Saying: Bill Frisell Explores
the Music of John Lennon. $30.

ON THE STAGE
Running on stage at the Purple
Rose Theatre Company in
Chelsea through Sept. 1 is Ernest
Thompson's On Golden Pond, a
touching drama about an irascible
retired professor and his open-
hearted wife who return to their
cottage for their 48th summer; their
peace is disrupted by a visit from
their grown daughter, who arrives
with a big chip on her shoulder,
a new fiance and his 13-year-old
son. The 1981 Oscar-winning Best
Picture version, starring Henry
Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane
Fonda, scored an Oscar nomination
for Jewish director Mark Rydell,
whose best-known onscreen role is
that of violent Jewish mob kingpin
Marty Augustine in Robert Altman's
The Long Goodbye (1973). Play info,

THE BIG SCREEN
Experience one of the most beloved
films of all time on the big screen
as the Redford Theatre presents
Casablanca at 8 p.m. Friday
and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, June

Moroccan city during the early

to a Jewish family in Budapest,
Hungary) and adapted for the
screen (from an unproduced play)
by screenwriter twin brothers Julius
and Philip Epstein and Howard
Koch (who was later blacklisted). It
stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid
Bergman and features Peter Lorre
(born Laszlo Lowenstein to a Jewish
family in what is now modern-
day Slovakia). $4. (313) 537-2560;
