simply to counter anti-Muslim sen-
timent of some who opposed it.
Cohen referred the JN to a letter
to the editor submitted to the Jewish
News last June which stated in part:
,`... across the country, people who
simply don't like the idea of Muslim
facilities in their neighborhood have
hidden their bias behind a smoke-
screen, using — really, abusing —
procedural arguments to try to block
them. That tactic is straight out of
the anti-Semite's playbook.
"With our commitment to wel-
come the stranger and our centuries
of experience being on the receiving
end of prejudice and discrimina-
tion, for Jews not to stand up for the
right of any religious organization to
locate a new school and community
center where they want to if per-
mitted by law would be a shandeh
[Yiddish for a shame]."
Last June's letter also said Cohen
had "encouraged the school board to
proceed with the sale if it complied
with its established procedures and
the law and if it deemed the sale to
be in the best interests of the school
district."
Attorney General Schuette's office
would not comment on the law
center's letter or the issues it raises,
except to say it had been received
and was being considered. They
declined to speculate when a deci-
sion would be made, saying they get
many such requests.
Greenstein, one of two plaintiffs
in the original lawsuit to block the
sale, said, "I was pleasantly sur-
prised to find out that the Thomas
More Law Center had requested a
grand jury investigation into the
Eagle Elementary School sale issue.
I learned a few new points from
reading its 20-page detailed and
clear allegation summary, which
confirmed the claims in our lawsuit.
"I hope the attorney general corn-
missions the grand jury investigation
so that the public can learn the truth
as to what happened:'
