Polyphony

Foundation

believes music

to be the

language:

Polyphony helps bridge the divide
between Arab and Israeli youth.

C

ongregation Shir Tikvah will
host a special evening per-
formance by the Polyphony
Youth Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
June 25, at the synagogue in Troy.
The Polyphony Foundation is a non-
profit organization that uses the power
of music to bridge the divide between
Arab and Jewish communities in
Israel. Polyphony serves as a model for
cooperation worldwide based on cul-
tural exchange, dialogue and partner-
ships. To achieve this goal, Polyphony
provides music education and other
innovative programs to serve Arab
and Jewish youth in Israel.
This year, Polyphony was honored
with the Yoko Ono Courage Award for
the Arts.
With emphasis on work in Arab
schools, these programs help close the
education gap within Israeli society
while creating common ground for

Jewish and Arab youngsters to come
together around the language of classi-
cal music. Polyphony's Youth Orchestra
comprises the most talented Israeli
Arab and Jewish young musicians
and their teachers who participate in
Polyphony's various programs.
"We are so excited about what
Polyphony represents and is bring-
ing to Southeastern Michigan," said
Wren Beaulieu-Hacks, director of
Lifelong Learning at Congregation
Shir Tikvah.
"These amazing students from very
divergent backgrounds are rising
above the social, economic and politi-
cal divides, using music as the vehicle
of unification. This concert is a true
celebration of the students' musical
talents and also of inspiring unity."
The concert is free. For details, call
Congregation Shir Tikvah at (248)
