Swim and activewear from HydroChic

Judith Lederman
Special to the Jewish News

A

recent study found that
women feared the very
thought of trying on bath-
ing suits. Jewish women near Oak
Park, it seems, have nothing to fear,
as HydroChic, an alternative type of
swimwear consisting of mix-and-
match swim tops and long skirts, are
fast becoming a hot fashion item.
The modest and SPF50 protective
swimwear can be worn as activewear
as well and allows women to transition
from swim to gym to kiddie pickup
in modest manner. As word about the
modest swimwear spreads, religious
Christians and Muslims in the area are
picking up the trend as well.
The Australian study that caused
a stir in national media revealed that
women experience increased stress
levels when anticipating trying on
conventional swimwear because they
have a tendency to compare them-
selves to other women in the dressing
room and eventually in public places.
"We created HydroChic to allow
women to opt out of the proverbial
swimsuit competition that most have
not signed up for',' explains Sara Wolf,
co-founder of the fashion line. "When
we go to the beach, we go to have a
good time, to enjoy ourselves and to
be carefree — not stressed. And that,
we believe, is why the Australian study
resonated so strongly. Women should
be comfortable when at the beach,

pool or resort."
Personal Trainer Stella Koivigui,
who works at the JCC in Oak Park,
loves the trend. The swimwear allows
her to comfortably swim in public —
something she would never do in a
regular swimsuit — and she can wear
it for workouts and personal training
sessions.
"I teach Zumba, muscle and core
conditioning, boot camp and kick-
boxing classes," explains Koivigui. "I
think it is very liberating for religious
women who love to swim and exercise
to have HydroChic wear. It is very
comfortable, fits nicely but does not
have a tight fit, dries quickly and is
at the same time fashionable, modest
and comfortable."
The online company recently
engaged a local distributor to sell the
line of swimsuits in Oak Park, and the
trend is catching on fast as summer
sinks into the Metro Detroit area.
Koivigui, whose clients range in age
from 13 to 75, and who include every-
one from those trying to lose weight to
women who are dedicated and hard-
core gym enthusiasts, is not surprised
that the trend took off.
"HydroChic allows women to swim
during co-ed pool hours or at co-ed
beaches and go for a jog immediately
afterward."
