clothes for their children before school

do it."
Colonial had five floors of clothing,
furniture and various dry goods, sell-
ing out in 1964.
Mike and Harvey Shapiro turned
a $50 purchase into the flourishing
Kiddieland children's toys and furni-
ture chain. Mike had worked 25 years
at a Detroit Chevy plant, but got frus-
trated because Jews weren't advancing
enough in the auto industry in those
days. Two stores named Kiddieland had
gone bankrupt and, for $50, they basi-
cally bought the name and rights to the
store at McNichols (Six Mile) Road and
Prairie in 1949.
Mike continued to work at the plant
while his wife, Regina, and son, Harvey,
ran the store. That led to big stores in
Ann Arbor and Oak Park, then a total
of seven in the Metro area; the chain
closed in 1995.
"We did a great business in juvenile
furniture and children's clothing until
the big chain competition just got too
tough:' recalled Harvey Shapiro of West
Bloomfield. "Things were a lot different
in many ways back then."
