UATZ, v4ozvi,

The historic hour of 10 a.m. Friday,
May 14,1948 — the fifth day of Iyar,
5708 — was fortified by another great
moment when, that very day, at 6:15 p.m.,
President Harry S Truman, on behalf of
the United States of America, recognized
the reborn State of Israel.
It was indeed a day for congratulations,
for a collective Mazel Toy, for rejoic-
ing, for repetition of the ancient Hebrew
words:
Hazor'im be-dimha, be-rinha yiktzoru
— They who sow in tears shall reap with
joy.
It was more than a coincidence that on
the Sabbath after the Day of Liberation
— on May 15 — the Prophetic selection
read in synagogues throughout the world
was from the ninth chapter of Amos. The
Prophet speaks of returning the captives
of Israel and he declares:
"They shall build the waste places and
inhabit them; and they shall plant vine-
yards, and drink the wine thereof; they
shall also make gardens and eat the fruits
of them. And I shall plant them upon their
land, and they shall no more be plucked
out of their land which I have given them,
saith the Lord thy God."
Prophecy and hope have kept our people
alive. Prophecy and hope have been our
mandates for Zion, not manmade instru-
ments that men have tried to destroy. The
word of the Lord, the Scriptures, were our
mandates, not the promises that men of ill
will tried to break.
But the same prophecy that moti-
vated Jewish idealism and courage also
has motivated the encouragement we
have been given by the Balfours and
the Wilsons, by the tens of thousands of
Christian supporters of the Zionist cause,
by men and women of good will through-
out the world.
It is the indestructible faith and cour-
age that has won and, in our hour of
joy, we give thanks to the Almighty for
having made real for us the words our
people have recited for thousands of
years: Ze Hayoin oso Hashem, nagilah
ve-nismechah bo — "This is the day that
has been created by the Lord, we rejoice
in it."

We are thankful to President Truman
for having acted promptly with cour-
age and dignity on the day of Israel's
Liberation. It is true that it was a day of
self-liberation—and only through self-
liberation can a people be freed. No one
can give liberty to any one else. Liberty
must be earned, and in our case, it had
to be fought for. Only auto-emancipation'
is honorable, and we have redeemed our
honor. Nevertheless, President Truman's
speedy action in recognizing the State of
Israel has speeded the implementation of
the State and has eased the tension of the
Jews of America. We are not ungrateful
for it.
The tens of thousands of Christians
who have given us encouragement in our
efforts will be remembered in the annals
of Israel as the blessed and the saintly
among the nations of the world.
Ze hayom kivinu lo — This is the day
for which we had hoped. And, in the days
of rejoicing, we recall with reverence the
names of the pioneers who had estab-
lished the foundation for the redeemed
Eretz Israel, the leaders from Herzl and
Nordau, from Smolenskin and Kalischer
and Pinsker, down to Weizmann and
Silver and Wise and Lipsky and Ben-
Gurion and Shertok.
It is a great day on which we are able to
greet the first President of the State and
People of Israel: Dr. Chaim Weizmann.
He has labored and struggled for a free
Zion. He has been betrayed by many and
was given a raw deal by his adopted land
to which he had contributed so much
of his scientific skill. But — all is well
that ends well, and we are happy that
President Weizmann has lived to see the
day of the fulfillment of prophecy. It is
our sincere prayer that he will be granted
strength to carry on the effort for com-
plete reconstruction of Israel's destiny
and that Great Britain may be among our
strongest allies, alongside with the United
States of America, whose leaders have
given us so much courage.
To the leaders of the Government Israel
and to the builders of the State of Israel,
we say: CHAZAK VE'EMATZ! May your
hands be strengthened with the help of
God and the entire People Israel.
