What the

Jewish News

Means To The Community-

Alt Sets Us Apart'
We in Detroit pride
ourselves in feel-
ing that we have
the greatest Jewish
community in North
America. As an indi-
vidual who has been
privileged to partici-
pate in the national
Jewish scene, I believe we are cor-
rect in this judgment. While we have
been extremely well organized with
a strong Federation, blessed with a
dedicated and communally conscious
rabbinate and sensitive laity from
all streams of our diverse religious
streams, what sets us apart from most
communities is the contribution of
the Jewish News.
Strong, independent, judgmental
and, frankly, occasionally at odds with
some aspects of community leader-
ship, the JN has provided us with a
barometer to help guide, frequently
goad and always challenge us to "do
the write/right thing." Through the
many years of my personal involve-
ment with the community, I have been
exposed to a generational change in
the JN leadership, and while the per-
sonalities and sensitivities of the edi-
torial staffs have naturally changed,
the mission has remained the same:
to strengthen the Detroit Jewish com-
munity and help guide its leadership
in order to preserve our traditions
as a vibrant, proud and productive
Jewish people. We in Detroit owe this
great institution an enormous debt.
May the Detroit Jewish News go from
strength to strength on its 70th and
someday celebrate that 120th anniver-
sary! Mazel tov!

Dr. Conrad Giles
Former Chair of the
Jewish Council for Public Affairs

'Source For Communication'
Communication
has always been a
way that we connect
with one another.
That is even truer
today with our
world changing at
a rapid rate. Our

Jewish community has become more
diverse and widespread. The Jewish
News allows us to share our news, our
events, our celebrations, our losses. It
brings to our attention issues about
which we need to debate.
For me, personally, I always turn to
the JN — wherever I am — to find
out what's happening in my home-
town. I wish the JN a happy anniver-
sary and continued success as my
source for communication.

President, American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee

'A Part Of The Fabric
Of Who We Are'
The Detroit Jewish
News is more than
just one of the main
institutions of our
community; it is
truly part of the fab-
ric of who we are. It's
been there to mark
the key passages of
all of our lives, sharing our stories and
celebrating our successes. Reading the
Jewish News each week is an essential
communal activity that helps us stay
connected and unified as Jews.
Seventy years is a tremendous mile-
stone. Like so many others, I'm very
grateful for what the paper has meant
to this community.

Douglas Bloom
President, Jewish Federation
of Metro Detroit

'A Common Thread'
From its inception
in 1942, the Jewish
News has played
a vital role in the
growth, success
and strength of our
Detroit Jewish com-
munity. With its
credible, indepen-
dent voice, the Jewish News continues
to serve as a common thread that
helps to inform, educate and inspire
its readers to take action for the bet-
terment of Detroit, Israel and the
Jewish people.
As the community navigates its
