Downtown Synagogue Gets
Grant From The Jewish Fund
The Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue
(IADS) received a three-year, $180,000
grant from The Jewish Fund to hire a
director to help expand programming
and organizational capacity.
Currently, the synagogue operates
on a completely volunteer basis. The
Jewish Fund grant, in combination with
a $40,000 challenge grant announced
earlier this year from the Mandell L.
and Madeline H. Berman Foundation,
will help support a full-time director
for at least three years. The position
should be sustained thereafter through
an increased membership base and
expanded fundraising.
"We are ecstatic about this grant and
grateful for not only the financial sup-
port, but also the demonstration of con-
fidence and belief in our mission:' said
IADS board chair, Leor Barak. "Hiring a
director would allow us to partner with
more organizations and expand our
programming, while freeing up board
time to focus on fundraising and other
organizational goals."

In addition to expanding programs
and membership, IADS' plans for the
near future include fully renovating its
historic building in Detroit's Capitol
Park district. Said Barak, "In partner-
ship with the other recent and planned
developments in the city, IADS is cre-
ating a vibrant hub of Jewish life in
Detroit."
The formal job posting for the director
position will be available soon.

Colorado Indians, Jews
Share Genetic Marker
(JTA) — Israeli geneticists have linked a
Native American population in Colorado
to Jews expelled from Spain during the
Inquisition.

Geneticists at the Sheba Medical
Center in Tel Aviv discovered the genetic
mutation marker BRCA1 in a group of
Mexican Indians who had emigrated
from Mexico to the United States over
the past 200 years and settled in
Colorado, Haaretz reported.
BRCA1 is found in Jews of Ashkenazi
origin and leads to a higher incidence of
breast and ovarian cancer.
Researchers say the mutation found in
the Colorado Indians is identical to that
of Ashkenazim, according to Haaretz,
and dates to a period more than 600
years ago. Jews were expelled from Spain
in the 15th century.
Researchers say this offers genetic
proof that some of the Jews expelled
from Spain who reached South America
intermarried with the indigenous popu-
lation, whose descendants later migrat-
ed to Mexico and then the United States,
Haaretz reported.
Colorado's Mexican Indians do not
have any traditions that link them to
Jews, according to Eitan Friedman, who
headed the Sheba team.
