Reader Laughing
There are people who warm my heart,
and there are those whose words
stretch my imagination or cause me to
either re-evaluate or stand firm.
And then there are those people
who simply make me grin — an enor-
mous grin that lasts for hours!
I find all of these people in the IN,
but today Sy Manello's contribution in
Front Lines (May 24, page 3) started
my morning with a chuckle that grew
to a grin and will provide me with a
buffer in case I need one!
Many thanks!!

You Must Earn Money
In Order To Give Charity
I applaud the Jewish News for cor-
rectly identifying the proper rela-
tionship between "Capitalism and
Philanthropy" (May 31, page 1). It is
a sad reflection on our society that
Americans need to be reminded that
before one can donate money to char-
ity, the money must be earned by that
person.
Thus, as the title of your article sug-
gests, capitalism (i.e. making money)
precedes giving it away (i.e. philan-
thropy). All too often, many Jewish
institutions, schools and synagogues
inculcate our children with the ethic
of charity/social justice without teach-
ing them the necessary work ethic and
economic principles that will allow
our children to become philanthro-
pists.
They, in turn, become lifelong advo-
cates of giving away other peoples'
money via higher and higher rates of
coercive taxation.
The solution to creating a vibrant
charitable society is free enterprise.
Now more than ever, when our free
market system is under attack from
the White House, Jewish supporters of
capitalism need to assert the morality
of free markets and free minds.
All too often, liberals assert that
the only public policy consistent with
Jewish values is the welfare state or
socialism. Unfortunately, they ignore
the corrosive effect of dependency on
those individuals and families who
receive government handouts. Just
spend a few hours in Detroit neigh-
borhoods or schools to understand
the negative effect of a dependency
culture and economy.
As your article highlights, phi-
lanthropy requires a laissez-faire
economy and voluntary action the by

the philanthropist, which infers that
government coercion, the hallmark of
a welfare state or socialist system, is
incompatible with a free society.

How Does Chabad Lawsuit
Work To Increase Mitzvot?
I wish to discuss two matters regard-
ing "Going to Court" (May 24, page
10).
1.As the Rebbe's emissary, Rabbi
Berel Shemtov must know the
Lubavitch movement's primary goal is
to help more Jews perform more mitz-
vahs. Does he think that his lawsuit
will cause more Jews to perform more
mitzvahs, thus bringing moshiach
(messiah) here speedily in our time?
2.Assume, God forbid, Rabbi
Shemtov wins his lawsuit and fires
Rabbi Silberberg and forces his
members to follow him to a new and
needlessly expensive location. Does
he think that moving our Torahs and
other holy books to a new location
will cause more Jews to perform more
mitzvahs? Would it send an improper
message to both the Jewish and non-
Jewish communities?

Obama Reverses Stance
On Status Of Jerusalem
President Obama, in a speech to
AIPAC in 2008 clearly stated that
Jerusalem was the capital of Israel:
"La me clear, Israel's security is
sacrosanct, it is non-negotiable, the
Palestinians need a state ... that is con-
tiguous and cohesive and that allows
them to prosper, but any agreement
with the Palestinian people must pre-
serve Israel's identity as a Jewish state
with secure, recognized, defensible
borders, and Jerusalem will remain
the capital of Israel and it must remain
undivided."
On March 28, 2012, Matthew Lee,
a reporter for the Associated Press,
questioned Victoria Nuland, the
president's spokesperson for the State
Department during a press conference.
He repeatedly asked her if it is the pol-
icy of the United States that Jerusalem
is the capital of Israel. Basically, she
refuses to answer the question. This
exchange can be watched on YouTube.
President Obama has done a com-
plete 180-degree turnaround from
what he said in 2008.

Corrections

Yes, but more
importantly, the
IRS, on May 21st,
announced major
changes to the Offer in
Compromise Rules. At long
last, these changes make it far
more possible to compromise
tax than under the old
law. In fact, the old Offer
in Compromise laws were
frequently misused by many
of the "tax relief firms" that
promised gold and delivered
chop liver. The new changes
are important and if you have
lingering tax debt, you should
see if you qualify for this
program. Even if you don't,
we can work out reasonable
installment payment plans
that are affordable.
