Last year's Run for the Ribbon

W

ith Father's Day around
the corner, many of us
reflect on the special men
in our lives. Keeping them healthy is
important, including screening them
for prostate cancer, which affects one
in six men and is the second lead-
ing cause of death, according to the
American Cancer Society. That is why
early detection is so important.
The Michigan Institute of
Urology's Men's Health Foundation
is hosting the Fourth Annual MIU
Run for the Ribbon 5K on Father's
Day, Sunday, June 17, at 8 a.m. at the
Detroit Zoo.
"Prostate cancer doesn't affect just
an individual; it affects his entire
family," said Michael Lutz, M.D.,
board member of the MIU Men's
Health Foundation and urologist with
Michigan Institute of Urology. "We
also hope the race will inspire more
men to fight for their health with
appropriate screenings!'
Registrations made before June
12 are $30 for adults; $20 for chil-
dren. Race day registration is $35

for adults; $25 for children. Register
online at MIURunForTheRibbon.org
until June 12.
Participants will receive an official
T-shirt, and ribbons will be available
to those who wish to participate in
honor of an individual with prostate
cancer. Medals will be awarded to all
finishers, with special awards going
to top finishers in several age catego-
ries. Those with prostate cancer will
be given a commemorative hat so
they can be honored and supported
throughout the race. This year, regis-
trants also can honor a loved one by
placing his or her name on signage
along the course with a $5 donation.
Prior to the Run, on Friday, June 8,
MIU Men's Health Foundation will
host the Run for the Ribbon Gala
at Andiamo's Warren at 7 p.m. The
event will feature live entertainment
by the Simone Vitale Band, fine wine
and food, and a charity raffle. Tickets
are $175.
Proceeds from both events will
benefit prostate cancer research in
Southeastern Michigan.
