BEATRICE CANCHESTER, 89, of
Deerfield, Ill., formerly of Detroit, died
May 24, 2012.
Her happiest times were when she was
on her bike or had a grandchild in her
lap. Long before fitness was fashionable,
Bea rode her bike everywhere from a quick
trip to the grocery store to a hike down
the Venice Beach path. Shopkeepers from
Detroit to Encino, Calif., referred to her as
"the bike lady."
The love of her life was her husband,
Jack, whom she met at age 16 at a Central
High School football game. He spread out
his handkerchief on the bench so she would
have a place to sit.
They were married for 64 years until his
death in 2008. She had seven grandchildren
and took delight in their growth and in
hearing all of their stories and observa-
tions.
Mrs. Canchester was a secretary and
travel agent and worked at many compa-
nies, including Kux Manufacturing and
Elkin Travel.
Her interests in included Yiddishkeit,
crossword puzzles and Mickey Lolich. She
learned to read and write Yiddish when
she was well in to her 80s and wrote her
autobiography in Yiddish. She loved to
coffee klatch with her longtime friends,
including the Fralods, family and neigh-
bors.
She will be remembered for her abun-
dant salads, stalwart garlic peeling during
family pickle-making sessions, peanut but-
ter and chocolate chip sandwiches, and ice
cream for breakfast.
Mrs. Canchester is survived by her
sister, Shirley Bean of Los Angeles; chil-
dren, Lynne Corneli of Evanston, Ill., Dale
Cohodes of Wilmette, Ill., and Paul (Paula)
Canchester of Highland Park, Ill; grand-
children, Joseph and Zoe Corneli, David
(Joanne), Sarah and Nina Cohodes, Sidney
and Dara Canchester; many nieces, neph-
ews and cousins.
In lieu of contributions, the family asks
that you take a bike ride on your favorite
path.
