West Bloomfield. Noah Betman Teen2Teen Writer D uring J-Serve (a community- wide Jewish teen service day) on April 22, I and other Jewish teens went to a project run by the Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit dedicated to guiding and inspiring a "greener" Detroit. It was an experience I will not soon forget. Many people say you don't know what someone's life is like until you've walked a mile in their shoes. This hap- pened for me at J-Serve. Hearing the stories of the women we were working with really showed me how everyone gets to their current situation in so many different ways. While at the Greening of Detroit, we stripped tomato plants. We had to pay close attention to detail as we handled the delicate plants. As it was explained to us, the young tomato plants we were helping to grow will be distributed to hundreds of people in the city of Detroit to grow and eventually eat. Seeing how, in a few short hours, one can make such a big difference really makes me think about how meaningful community service can be. It is also very humbling to ponder about how privileged many people, including myself, are, and how others live a much more difficult life. That's the biggest thing I will take from J-Serve, the knowledge that with just a little effort, anyone can make a big dif- ference in the lives of others. Teens in our community are very fortunate to have the opportunity to volunteer at J-Serve, thanks to the dedication of more than 20 sponsor- ing organizations as well as funding provided by grants from PANIM and the Stephen H. Schulman Millennium Fund of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
