Bookstock 2012

10th annual used book

and media sale realizes record success.

B

ookstock, Metro Detroit's largest
used book and media sale, was
an enormous success, realizing a
record 20 percent increase in sales — and
the top sales year in its 10-year history.
All proceeds from the weeklong sale
benefit leracy and education projects in
Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.
Bookstock's pre-sale kicked off the
opening day of the weeklong sale with
a performance by the Wayne State
University Gospel Chorale and a parade
of Bookstock volunteers led by honorary
co-chairs Rochelle Riley, Detroit Free Press
columnist, and Neal Rubin, Detroit News
columnist.
The sale added a new twist to its mid-
week Bookbuster special days, raffling off
a baseball autographed by Tigers Hall of
Famer Al Kaline for those who made a
purchase of $25 or more. Sarah Flathers
of Garden City was thrilled to win the

coveted prize for her grandmother, a huge
Tigers fan, whose poor health prevented
her from attending Bookstock.
Janet Berman, Susi Schoenberger and
Karen Simmons are Bookstock co-chairs
and Roz Blanck and Jodi Goodman serve
as Bookstock's advisory chairs. More than
700 volunteers participate in Bookstock
each year, collecting and sorting books
and staffing the annual sale.
Bookstock is sponsored by the JN,
Hour Detroit magazine and Schostak
Brothers and Co. Bookstock partner
organizations include Akiva Hebrew Day
School, CommunityNEXT, Frankel Jewish
Academy, Hadassah-Greater Detroit
Chapter, Hillel of Metro Detroit, Jewish
Community Centers of Metropolitan
Detroit and Greater Ann Arbor, Jewish
Community Relations Council, National
Council of Jewish Women, Oakland
Literacy Council and ORT America. 0

The happy cast of Miriam Poppins

C

ongregation Shaarey Zedek
showcased its world premiere
of "Miriam Poppins" on Sunday,
April 29. Monica Finkelstein adopted
the script for the musical based on the
music and story of the classic Mary
Poppins; her husband, Cantor Meir
Finkelstein, wrote the song lyrics.
This is the fourth year Shaarey
Zedek has produced a "Hebrew School
Musical." The productions are gener-
ously funded by the Sidney J. & Melba
Winer (z'l) Creative Arts for Children
Fund.
Youth from the Shaarey Zedek
Religious School as well as CSZ mem-
bers who attend Hillel Day School,
began rehearsals in January. They
learned songs such as "Yasher Koach
Sister Minyanettes" (about fighting for
the right to have women's aliyot),"A
Spoonful of Sugar" (adapted to tell of the
fun of Jewish life and celebrations), and
"SuperChallahGiantLatkes" (about deli-
cious Jewish food). Cantor Finkelstein,

Ilyssa Brunhild and Adam Ben-Moche

assisted by Alexis Sack, directed the
production.

ming or religious school at Shaarey
