Register, Arthur Horwitz, president and founder of Renaissance Media, parent company of the Detroit Jewish News, has set his sights on preserving a piece of Detroit's Jewish history. In 2011, he found- ed the Detroit Jewish News Foundation, a nonprofit with a mission to preserve, digitize and make available to the public the entire Arthur Jewish News archive, Horwitz which dates to 1942. Horwitz will share his vision for the foundation he cre- ated at the 53rd annual meeting of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan on Tuesday, May 22, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Joining Horwitz will be the 2012 Leonard N. Simons History Award recipient, Michael Smith, archivist at the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University.The Simons Award recognizes individuals in the commu- nity who have made outstanding con- tributions to preserving, celebrating and sharing Michigan's Jewish history. For historians like Smith, Horwitz's move to create this permanent digital archive of the Detroit Jewish News will preserve a precious resource. Visually and with the written word, it will pro- vide not only a history of the Detroit area's Jewish organizations, lead- ers and families, but also a detailed account of the cultural, political and social history of Southeast Michigan. Since coming to the Detroit Jewish News in 1986, Horwitz has guided the growth and survival of the publication, which has become one of the most respected Jewish communal publica- 7 P.M. Horwitz created Renaissance Media in 2000 with noted philanthropist Michael H. Steinhardt. Smith, former director of the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University, has been a staunch partner in the Jewish community's preserva- tion and maintenance of its vast col- lection of archival documents, which is housed at the Reuther Library. Throughout this professional partner- ship, Smith has served as consultant, educator, mentor and adviser to the staff of the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives. Horwitz, father of three, lives in West Bloomfield with his wife, Gina. In addition to his positions with Renaissance Media and the Detroit Jewish News Foundation, he is a trustee of Detroit Public Television, a member of the University of Michigan-Dearborn board of advis- ers, founding advisory board member of New Michigan Media (a consor- tium of more than 140 ethnic and minority media outlets throughout Michigan), and a member of the Hillel of Metropolitan Detroit and the Jewish Community Relations Council boards.
